Fiorello! by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock (1960): Chosen by Committee episode 39

Back in dark days of January 2021, the podders at Chosen by Committee considered the political biographic musical Fiorello! The winner of the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the musical dramatized the career of New York mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, who took on the Tammany Hall political machine.

Opinions on the quality of Fiorello! were divided among the pod. The Pulitzer jury originally picked Lillian Hellman’s Toys in the Attic, but were overruled by the organization’s hierarchy.

This episode has gone unheard for months as Chosen by Committee took a recording hiatus, but the podcast is back with new episodes forthcoming. Chosen by Committee discusses every play (or musical) to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, from 1918 to the present. It’s made up of theater critic and educator Josh Herren, playwright John Rosenberg, and Phindie editor Christopher Munden.
