THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (Bucks County Playhouse): 60-second review

2014CastofBCPproductionofRockyHorror (1)The Bucks County Playhouse takes on Richard O’Brien’s cult classic THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. The narrator (John Bolton) introduces a wholesome, young couple – Brad Majors (Nick Clearley) and Janet Weiss (Alyse Alan Louis) – who find themselves with a flat tire during a rain storm. Seeking help and a phone, they stumble upon a castle belonging to Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Kevin Cahoon), a transvestite who is hosting a most curious gathering as he reveals his newest creation “Rocky” (Erik Altemus), a perfect creature designed to provide ultimate pleasure. The lot is wonderfully hospitable as they offer the young couple shelter for the night – none more hospitable than Frank, who gives both Brad and Janet real evenings to remember. As the night ushers on and the party-goers play, Riff-Raff (Jeremy Kushner) and Magenta (Ryah Nixon) announce their plans to return the group to the planet Transsexual in the galaxy Transylvania.

In true B-movie fashion, the show provides it all – song, dance, drama, comedy, and of course, utterly enjoyable debauchery. Director Hunter Foster and choreographer Lorin Latarro went no holds barred and brought out the best in the cast with an excellent performance that successfully captured the seedy guilty pleasure that feels so good it’s wrong. The stage design and musicians provided the key backdrop that made the show seamless. As should be expected, ROCKY HORROR, gives the audience an opportunity to participate as much or as little as they choose, even inviting the audience on stage for the classic “Time Warp”. If you do anything this Halloween season, treat yourself to the sheer eccentric goodness (and the eye candy) that is ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
