Philly Performing Artists Discuss their Untenable Careers: Video from the Philadelphia Artists Summit

Josh McIlvain’s interview with Charlotte Ford “The untenable career of a successful Philadelphia theater artist” (republished on this site from the Fringe Blog), sparked some soul-searching among Philadelphia performers. There isn’t much money in theater, and individual artists see precious little of that.

On June 23, 2014, artists Amy Smith, Debbie Shapiro, Jenny Laden, and John Frisbee hosted a community conversation to explore how many individual artists fail to find sustainable funding despite a vibrant city cultural sector. The discussion considered the factors that have contributed to the under-valuation of creative work in the arts, and brainstormed new models and advocacy tools to create an stable artistic community.
