Author: Kalila Kingsford Smith for thINKingDANCE

Philadelphia native Kalila Kingsford Smith is a performer with Dancefusion and Underground Dance Works, a teacher at Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center, a facilitator for Dance4Life Philly, and a choreographer in her spare time. A graduate of University of Michigan with a BFA in Dance and a BA in Cultural Anthropology, Kalila is curious about the ambiguity of experience. Guided by this interest, she completed a thesis entitled Body, Mind, and Frustration: Navigating Dance in the Context of Academia. A passionate advocate of the arts, Kalila’s choreographic process embodies concepts that emerge from multiple artistic practices. She relishes the challenge of creating movement and experiences that are accessible to audiences from a variety of backgrounds. She’s had the recent pleasure of performing with Dianne McIntyre, Peter Sparling, and Javanese choreographer FX Widaryanto. Kalila spends her free time watching film noir and researching the ideas that inspire her obsessions. Visit kalilakingsfordsmith.weebly.com for pictures, videos, and more.
