I was recently told I have a poor reputation among the “Philly improv community”, on the basis of one blunt “review” I wrote about an accidental visit to an improv play. That’s as may be, but as someone who admires varied performance art and treasures the potential of theater, it’s pleasing to hear exciting news from the burgeoning improv and sketch scene in Philadelphia: Local stalwarts Comedy Sportz recently celebrated its 20th anniversary; White Pines Productions has found a new space in Elkins Park for its new Bright Invention improv group. The Philly Improv Theater (PHIT) has established residency in the Adrienne Theatre.

This weekend (Thursday 2/27 and Friday 2/28) sees an enticing line-up of non-improv sketches at PHIT’s new home. The Incredible Shrinking Matt & Jacquie (Matt Schmitt and Jacquie Baker), winner of Philly Sketchfest’s Dirtiest Sketch and Witout award nominee for Best Sketch Group perform a variety of offbeat sketches. Opening for them will be an up-and-coming sketch team Jen & Quinton (Jen Curcio and Quinton J. Alexander featuring Karen Coleman) performing a series they like to call Love & Death that “explores a darker sense of humor”. Check out the headline act in this video:
