[2.1] AJAX, THE MADNESS (Attis Theatre): Fringe review

Ajax, the madness. Atis Theater. Philadelphia Fringe review.Men are made into animals. Animals turn into men, and then are murdered. Bloody, bloody Ajax. His story settles in on you, in the way that something that is deeply unsettling can settle. Rather, this story rises up from inside. Seven or eight endless minutes of laughing and sobbing open the piece, which proceeds to lather up the grief, pride, callousness and joy which accompany the bloodiest of murder. Legendary Greek director Theodoros Terzopoulos takes on Sophocles’s story of slighted Ajax who, stricken by a goddess into madness, murders cattle instead of generals, then takes his own life. By slicing one moment out of the classic story and telling it over and over, Terzopoulos and his performers carve steadily away at the dark corner of the male psyche which relishes in war. Expect controlled violence, balletic grace, and the kind of humor which leaves you wondering why you laugh.
