In an intimate setting of a converted Northern Liberties storefront, Deunde presented a highly experimental, improvisational, and fascinating Fringe performance titled WITH FLINT AND STEEL.  The informal setting provided audience members, seated on blankets and pillows along the floor, an up-close-and-personal encounter with the dancers and musicians as they performed an “intimate exploration of the point where the planned and the improvised meet.”

In a beautiful interchange between dancers and musicians, WITH FLINT AND STEEL showcased dancers Chloe Felesina and Gary Jeter (also with BalletX), cellist Gabriel Cabezas, and percussionist Ian Rosenbaum. The performance meandered along a path of instruments starting with the marimba, transitioning through cello and drums, before ending at a set of multi-sized flowerpots used for percussion.  The performance featured a diverse array of music including a new piece composed by Duende co-founder Alyssa Weinberg alongside a Baroque piece by Giovanii Gabrielli and a modern jazz piece by Pascal Le Boeuf. Duende is a new music and contemporary dance collective which focuses on the interaction between movement and music and is co-founded by composer Alyssa Weinberg, cellist Gabriel Cabezas and dancer/choreographer Chloe Felesina. WITH FLINT AND STEEL exemplifies the quality and mission of their work.
